The Seraphim of God
The Seraphim ascend to the height of heaven, which is the very Heart of God. They are so emblazoned with His all-consuming love, in such close intimacy with Him, that they actually catch fire with the superabundance of love. Their flames serenade the Sacred Heart and offer incense upon the altar of God.
St. John of the Cross
It will happen that while the soul is inflamed with the Love of God, it will feel that a seraph is assailing it by means of an arrow or dart which is all afire with love. And the seraph pierces and in an instant cauterizes this soul, which, like a red-hot coal, or better a flame, is already enkindled. The soul is converted into an immense fire of Love. Few persons have reached these heights.
“I saw the Lord seated on a high and lofty throne, with the train of his garment filling the temple. 2 Seraphim were stationed above; each of them had six wings: with two they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they hovered.
3 One cried out to the other:
“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts!
All the earth is filled with his glory!”
4 At the sound of that cry, the frame of the door shook and the house was filled with smoke.
5 Then I said, “Woe is me, I am doomed! For I am a man of unclean lips, living among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!” 6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me, holding an ember which he had taken with tongs from the altar.
7 He touched my mouth with it. “See,” he said, “now that this has touched your lips, your wickedness is removed, your sin purged.”
8 Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?” “Here I am,” I said; “send me!”
With the adoration of the Seraphim, the Third Heaven is complete. The Third Heaven embodies the threefold nature of God — that He is Holiness, that He is Wisdom, and that He is Love. And Holiness is attributed most fittingly to God the Father as the source of all Being and Goodness, Wisdom to God the Word who said, “I am the Truth,” and Love to God the Holy Spirit, who is the Beauty that draws Father and Son towards each other.
The Third Heaven also completes the Celestial Hierarchy. It ministers to all of Creation and even unto God Himself.
